| After all the hassle trying to get that 320GB drive..
The 160GB one in my Macbook has a load of bad blocks. It’s a Western Digital drive just outside of warranty.. I’d used it to replace a 40GB drive that came in the Macbook (which i then managed to fry with a broken usb drive caddy, so that’s not a viable fallback!) So I had the choice of putting my PS3′s old 60GB drive into the Macbook, which would have been very cramped as it needs Windows and osX installed for uni stuff.. OR just partitioning the drive while leaving the final 40GB as empty space, and hope that the bad blocks dont multiply.. I went with that option. Scary.* I needed to make a windows partition on K’s laptop too, which meant I had to defrag her drive. Never defragged an osX drive before, very strange. It worked though.. Once I’d got the software. Then I accidentally deleted something over the network thinking i was looking at a local drive because I’d stupidly set up the folder structure to look identical on the laptop and desktop Macs. Then I failed completely to recover the data. Ugh. It was old childrens records belonging to my pseudo-grandparents that I’d recorded for Eli while I was in Scotland.. Now I need to record them again.. Oops. Again, needed to get more software for that too. I guess I could’ve accidentally nuked much more important things than that, but it did make me feel veeeerry tired and stupid. Don’t think I’ve ever accidentally deleted anything before. Hmm, looking at it more positively I suppose it’s quite nice that only now have I had to get disk rescue, repartitioning, defragging software etc – goes to show I’ve been using the Macs for a very long time without needing them. (apart from that time my G4′s two IBM Deathstars failed in succession, but we used windows software to get the data back then.) – the only bits to have failed were after market mods or additions too. edit: sorry if you saw this before, i pulled it and reposted.. |

Hmm..
A few months ago I paid £50ish for my *second hand* 20GB Xbox360 Hard Disk (only 12 of which is usable once the drive is formatted). At the time it was the only sort of 360 hdd available, with a RRP of £70.. (!)
I just bought a 320GB drive for my PS3, for £57 new. Hurrah for supporting standards. Good call, Sony.
Stupidly though CCL sent me a 160GB drive instead.
So it’s getting send back.. After I’d installed 95% of my PS3 downloads onto it. Gaah.
Well I’m back from Scotland..
Not that i mentioned I was going there in the first place. Elizabeth met her sort-of great grandparents, went to the beach, had walks around woods and stuff. I took a load of photos and will upload them shortly.
Watched 30 Days Of Night and really liked it.. Watched the remake of The Omen and wondered why they bothered.. Hmm..
Tried to help/teach an elderly person how to do normal word processing in Vista. Wow. I’d only really used Vista for gaming, UnrealED, Blender and Firefox, occasionally loading Internet Explorer (ugh).. Vista Word is crazy.. I hadn’t realised the extent MS have obfuscated all of the options into “hidden” places. That doesn’t make it simpler! Having a microscopic graphical symbol that makes no sense unless you understand the symbolism or mouse over it, with the alternatives being 2 levels down a clickable menu IS NOT how you make things easier to use.
I quite like it for personal use, by moving the options off to a corner sub-menu its more like Linux, oddly, which seems like the exact opposite of what I imagine MS were trying to do, but yes.. It’s ok if you’re the sort of person who’s comfortable with and enjoys poking around.. It’s great if you like learning new systems – but I doubt I’m in the majority there and i don’t think this new way is more intuitive than the old one; a new user who’s not good with computers having to learn /this/ system has a significantly harder struggle ahead of them than they would with XP..
I’m pretty sure (well, I hope!) it can be customised to be much more “friendly”, with persistent text labels and bigger icons etc, but I wasn’t supposed to be reconfiguring Word to look completely different..
Oh well.. I’m very glad for Pages and OpenOffice.
I just got a big load of paperwork from uni.. I go back on Sept 25th. Just a few more months and I’ll have a degree! It’s going to be potentially complex to juggle with Eli stuff but I’m really looking forward to being back there again.
For a couple of days our land line had been broken.. Which is odd, i didnt think that happens much? After ringing Virgin twice and being told to ring back in two hours because /their/ system was down too… Then having to jump through hoops whilst he tests the line in ways I’d already done myself and explained.. Guy came out and fixed it.. Apparently something had come loose in one of those connection boxes by a main road..
Our phone itself has been dying for months (the screen slowly disappearing, making it hard to tell who you’re ringing, hmm).. So we ordered a new pair of wireless BT phones from Amazon.. They arrived today and one of them doesn’t work.. Soo, boxed that all back up and we’re sending it back. Yay. Annoying that one of them worked fine and we can’t just send the faulty one back.. Oh well!
Eli’s IKEA cot arrived today, so we put that together and I set up a little sound system in her “room” (more like our little walk-in wardrobe).. Made of Kat’s old G3 iBook, ~10GB of MP3s, a tiny AIWA mini-system and a pair of big old wooden tower speakers. We can control it from my iphone/Kat’s ipod from anywhere on the wifi network. I love it when things work.
Just watched Chronicles of Riddick directors cut.. It’s a hell of a lot better than the cinema version.. Doesn’t take much to change something from just “bad” to bad in a good way.
I’ve mentioned this everywhere but here. Kind of forgot I can do friends only posts, sooo, here goes..

MY NEW PHONE IS:
SEXY
Even if the scaling does odd things to it.
.. [discussing Roleplaying housework toys]

Kat 15:01: kids are quite happy to pretend to do housework… but will not do it for real. mysterious but true.
Mixel! 15:05: Maybe she’ll like the real thing too.
Kat 15:05: she can use the tiny dyson.
That thing is neat.
Mixel! 15:05: lol at least the girl ones are only encouraging you to use /slightly/ dangerous things (an iron)
Whereas the boy ones teach them to use POWER TOOLS
Kat 15:06: Boys can use an iron too.. to KILL STUFF
Mixel! 15:06: I wonder if there’s a Daddy and Me chainsaw set
Kat 15:06: bash bash
squish
sizzle
Mixel! 15:06: there IS a daddy and me chainsaw set hahaha
Kat 15:06: lol

And errr.. yes, we do speak online when I’m in the basement.
– Mushroom is really dumb. She followed us up the road when we went to the shops with Elizabeth.. Then hid in the hedge of one of the gardens for about 5 hours.. On getting home I just assumed she was out, but eventually went searching for her and found her the last place we saw her when we were heading out..
Aren’t cats supposed to be good at this stuff? No wonder there are always so many “Have you seen my cat?” signs around, she was less than 30 seconds away from the house and had been there through a torrential downpour. Silly.
batkat‘s earwig was actually pretty strange. Yes, it did come out of a peach she was eating.. Then it climbed into Elizabeth’s car seat.. So, Kat called me upstairs, where I spent 30 mins convincing her that she’d imagined it, because it seemed pretty unlikely.. I mean, living in the stone? Climbing up something to escape rather than just wandering along? Surely they don’t just jump out of fruit? Sounded too bad to be true.. (also, she didnt know it was an earwig, and her explanation sounded pretty nasty as she’d only seen it fleetingly and it caught her off guard..) .. Until I found it in the lining of the car seat. I wasn’t going to leave it thinking there might be something in there so took it apart to be reassuring – totally not expecting to find anything. So, there you go. Earwigs DO live in the middle of peaches. Google agrees. Weird. Freaked us both out. I’m pretty useless when it comes to insect stuff but just put him in the garden.
Oh, and finally photos of the Lake District holiday: Mixelmagic / Flickr / MobileMe.
Previews:

This is a pre-giant-gallery update, but I’ve found a nice quick way of mirroring my photo gallery between Mixelmagic and my other online photo dumps.. The big update should be tommorow.
If you want to see Elizabeth photos;
Eli on Mixelmagic
On Flickr
And if your browser can handle it;
Eli on MobileMe
And no, I’m not sure why i need 3 online copies of the photos either..
On another note, happy birthday batkat, love you.
Since I last posted a lot has happened. Before I last posted quite a lot had already happened that I was putting off mentioning.. So, yeah I have a lot to write about.
Elizabeth grew a lot.. She’s much more easily entertained now, but she needs constant stimulation. Which is fine, its cute how easy it is to make her smile/laugh at things.
We went to the Lake District for a week with batkat‘s family. I took >800 photos. Need to sort through them all. It was a good holiday anyway. Lots of rain and walking and relaxing and ducks. And learning the highway code.
Photos of all this stuff forthcoming btw.
My other “baby”, my new iMac.. Is wonderful. Throws things around at crazy speeds. It makes less fan/buzzing noise than the 24″ Samsung monitor it’s using as a second display, and it’s slimmer than the Samsung. Pretty funny. The Samsung IS a much better display, but still, that’s some pretty engineering.
Should last me another 4-5 years, maybe more.. Unless Apple do something really weird to make the old machines suddenly less useful (again? hoo, intel transition) .. The G5 now lives in the girly room where it’s a TV recorder and Jukebox. It’s almost the right size to be a real jukebox.. Originally the plan had been to sell it, which would make a lot of sense as I really probably can’t afford a new machine without doing things like that.. *BUT* I’m way too attached to it.. I’ve not had that sort of rappour with a machine since my first Amiga 1200. Need to keep it around as a failsafe! Nope.. That’s a crap reason. Can’t think of a logical one, though at least it should get good use by Kat and Eli, eventually.. I’ll be able to pay off my credit with my student loan anyway!.. Replacing debt with debt, yay!
Really though, the iMac wasn’t too frivolous a purchase, neither my Athlon64 Windows PC nor my PPC based Mac were powerful enough to work well in Unreal Engine stuff, which is what we’ll be using in Yr3 of the course. Also, you can’t (without hackery) do iPhone development in PPC based Xcode, so my main machine needed Intel.. And.. Speed is good. I have a pretty long “why I need this” list, but for the first couple of weeks I still felt a bit uncomfortable with it. Now, not so much, it’s already performing way over my expectations and making my life a hell of a lot simpler.
And… SOUL CALIBUR 4 in SIX DAYS!

Last two Drs I’ve seen – one for my bone density, the other for general stuff – have basically told me i need to get more sunlight as it’s the best way to absorb vitamin D, which I’m deficient in, which affects all sort of stuff. Interesting.. It’s not like I actively avoid sunlight, it just kind of happens this way.
The last couple of days have been a bit ropey. Yesterday I had crazy tooth (well, socket) pain. Since they took out the wisdom teeth one of the sockets is hyper sensitive. Any sugar, too hot or cold stuff gets near it and the entire left side of my face feels all throbby and tight, then after a while my ear goes wrong too. Unpleasant.
Sugar being one of my staples that’s going to take some getting used to – hopefully once the gum heals more it won’t be an issue.. Uugh. I’ve been having to clean the sockets out with a sort of squirty syringe type thing.
Soo, midday yesterday at the Drs appointment, he asked if i had any indigestion (yes) because I’ve been taking way too much ibuprofen. So now I have meds to protect my stomach lining.. Anti-inflamatory stuff for toothache and various other things.
Then when i got home I started being sick for a few hrs.. Exorcist style. Just recovering from that today. Both this, and the last time I was really sick I’d just eaten quite a lot of cucumber. First time I thought I was being silly, but its a bit of a strange coincidence.
… I haven’t read anyone’s journals in probably over a month, sorry.. Been busy.
